Filo di Scozia: an authentic legacy that links two countries

Il Filo di Scozia is produced by using the precious long staple Egyptian cotton  that grows exclusively in the Delta of the Nile river and whose exceptional physical properties allow it to produce very fine and comfortable yarns, and at the same time, very resistant. The cotton is then spun, twisted and gassed to then be put into traction in skein and immersed in a caustic soda bath to ensure its high quality and strength.

.. but then why of Scotland?

Tradition tells of an Italian textile manufacturer who, in the second half of the nineteenth century, went in England in search of fine yarns. The fortunate one met with the chemical and textile fiber scholar John Mercer (1791-1866), a native of Lanchashire and inventor of the work called mercerization, he made the producer discover the advantages of the yarn thus treated. Subsequently the Italian imported the yarn and began to promote it throughout the world, receiving great acclaim.
Thus, from the second half of the 19th century, the Filo di Scozia became the best among the yarns produced by J&P Coats, a yarn factory in Paisley, a Scottish town located in the central-western area of the Lowlands, along the White Cart River. From here the denomination Filo di Scozia remained unchanged over time.
Thanks to the excellent quality and excellent performance offered by this yarn, the Filo di Scozia is known throughout the world but with different denominations: in English as Lisle Cotton Yarn, in Spanish Hilo de Escocia and in French Fil d’Ecosse.
